The Carnival - Helen Clapcot

The Stockport Carnival is an annual community event which has been running for over 100 years. This painting captures the parade of 2013.

Helen Clapcott creates an extensive body of visual research, through sketches on location, which directly inform each painting. Helen is one of very few contemporary artists using the medium of egg tempera; mixing pigment with egg yolk and applying to gesso tablets.

She often plays with scale, packing lots of detail into each work. Industrial mill buildings and architectural features such as the viaduct, dominate and people become tiny and insect like as cranes, cars and trains move overhead.

'It captures the spirit of Stockport brilliantly - people and architecture in full accord, plus it's witty and beautifully painted. She's the tops!'

We will be announcing the dates and times for the workshops with artists to re-imagine the top eight very soon.
